Finding Good People

I took a nice long walk in the unusually warm weather yesterday..and I’m happy to report that there are daffodils already in bloom!

Along the way, I ran into an old guy who has turned his corner lot into an amazing garden complete with a bridge over a tiny creek, pathways edged in stones, little garden statues, chimes, name it-he has it. Truth be told, I’m much more of a minimalist, (..not into garden gnomes) but whether it’s my aesthetic or not, I always appreciate others’ passions.Β  He was in the front yard as I passed, edging along a still dormant collection of rose bushes.

“I love your garden!” I called out.

He smiled, put his noisy tool down in the grass and walked over to the curb.

We got to talking about the weather and flowers and worms that can eat every single leaf off a tree in a day. He told me that he and his wife have lived in this house on the corner for over 25 years, and that every May they add a bit more to their garden. He recounted stories of neighborhood teens having prom pictures taken on the little bridge and the kids who hunt for the Easter eggs his wife still hides every year amongst the perennials. You could see how incredibly proud he was of the role their garden plays in the life of the neighborhood.

As we said our goodbyes, I couldn’t help but think that the world is full of really good people.

  1. This is a great reminder, Cindy! I would like to point out that you are a good person too. Stopping to talk to someone who obviously loves their unique garden and express your favor with it, was a good thing to do. πŸ™‚
