“Reality” TV

I was cruising around online last night and came across a “newsflash” that the Housewives of Orange County will be adding two new ladies to their ranks this season. The article revealed that they will both come pre-packaged with sordid and troubled pasts. What a relief I’m sure for the viewers who feared they might be coming from a convent…?

Full disclosure, or rather confession, I used to be addicted to this show. Having lived in Orange County back in the late eighties, I was curious to see how the ladies behind the gates of Coto de Caza really lived. I’ll admit I was drawn to the drama and the chaos ..but after a while, the tone of the show started to turn from playfully outrageous to just plain sad, mean, humiliating and destructive. Couples were divorcing, kids were getting into serious trouble, and the women all seemed to be drinking scary amounts of alcohol.

Over the past eight years that the show has been on TV, the most damaged, and the most stable, cast members continue to drop out creating a constant, almost creepy, need for “new blood.”

Looks like another transfusion is coming.

Good luck to them all, something tells me they’ll need it.  I for one won’t be watching….
